We snack and drinkâwell, mostly, he eats, and I drink. Iâm on my second cup of champagne. And Iâm finallyâthankfullyâstarting to feel it a little.
âItâs funny. Your mom and Jennifer and I were talking about life and love the other day on the dock, and somehow, they got on the subject of losing their virginity. Jennifer was in the back of a pickup, like this.â
âSounds romantic,â he scoffs, rolling his eyes.
âNo, she said it actually was. I guess he went out and bought a blow-up camping mattress, put it in the back of his truck, and covered it with quilts his grandmother had made. They parked by the lake, ate a picnic he had packed, drank a cheap bottle of wine, and did it that night, under the stars.â
Chase raises an eyebrow at me and smirks. âIf you were still a virgin, we could re-create that now. Just replace the cheap wine with good champagne. Are you ever going to tell me what happened with you and Matt?â
âI really donât want to talk about Matt.â
Chase gives me that look.
âFine. Letâs say that I was committed to him, but he didnât return the favor.â
âYou realize that everyone knows that, right? That Iâve known that?â
âThen, why did you make me tell you? Feel the need to rub it in? Hurt me more?â
âAbsolutely not. I just want you to talk to me. You can talk to me about guys, you know.â
âDoes that mean youâll talk to me about girls?â
âWhat do you want to know?â
âI saw Kelseyâs name on the calendar,â I growl. I can practically feel my fangs coming out.
âYeah, her grandparents have a condo just around the bend of the lake. She thought it would be fun for us to hang out.â
âItâs supposed to be family only.â
âHer trip was planned well before mine. They come the same week every year. I asked my parents and your dad before I told her it was okay. I donât know why you care. Itâs not like weâve been hanging out that much despite my attempts.â
âYour attempts?â I scoff. âYouâve been going to the resort, picking up girls.â
âI didnât go tonight.â
âBecause you said you were tired.â
âBecause I was hoping to spend time with you. But Iâm not going to beg, Dani. A guy can only take so much of having his heart stomped on before he just gives up.â
I whip my head in his direction and suck in a breath. âIâve stomped on your heart?â
He leans back. âMaybe you are like my mom,â he states. âEveryone said she was clueless, too.â
âBut she told me she wasnât! She told me how they used to stare up at the stars and think about how infinitely big the universe was and how small they felt in comparison. She said thatâs why it took them so long to get together. Because she felt small in comparison to how big their love felt.â
âIs that how you feel?â he asks, leaning toward me, his eyes full of emotion.
âI understand why she felt that way.
